Following the stuff your gut fest that is otherwise known as Thanksgiving you might think a title like, "It's fitting", would be celebrating pants you can continue to wear. But let's go a different direction.
Let's say you were driving down the interstate in an area with a posted speed limit of 55mph and let's say you were moving more in the neighborhood of 75mph. Then, let's say, you spot a State Trooper on a motorcycle camped out on the other side of the Interstate with a radar gun. At this time you remove your lead foot from the accelerator in hopes to avoid a ticket. 30 minutes go by and you exit the interstate and pull into the first gas station to fill up. This particular station seems to be having a good day so you find yourself waiting in line for a pump. While waiting, your eyes catch a sighting of Frank Poncherello or maybe it's John Baker either way this "CHiPs" officer is now heading in your direction. He approaches your window and politely ask for your license and registration. You respond, "Ah...if you don't mind me asking...were you the Officer with the radar gun...um...about 30 miles back in that direction?" Ponch says, "Yes...I clocked you doing 20 miles over the speed limit". You say, "If you don't mind me asking, what took you so long to catch up to me?". Ponch replies, "I was hoping you wouldn't ask that...I couldn't get my motorcycle cranked".
This is a true story that happened to myself. Good news was I did not get a ticket, only a warning, and a few laughs with a very nice State Trooper who instructed me to slow down. If I had received a speeding ticket for going 20miles over the posted speed limit I think we could all agree that would have been 'fitting'. That word, 'fitting', is what I want to focus on.
adjective: fit·ting | \ˈfi-tiŋ \
Definition of fitting: of a kind appropriate to the situation : SUITABLE
You would agree in my aforementioned story a speeding ticket would be appropriate to the situation, or fitting.
Psalm 147:1 in the ESV translation says, "Praise the Lord! How good to sing praises to our God! How delightful and how FITTING!" Praise to the Lord, singing praise to the Lord, is appropriate to the situation! What is the situation that praise is fitting for?
Let's take a look...
147:3, He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds
147:5, Great is our Lord and abundant in power, his understanding is beyond measure
147:6, The Lord lifts up the humble (or afflicted)...
147: 8-9, 14, He covers the heavens with clouds; he prepares rain for the earth; he makes grass grow on the hills. He gives to the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that cry. ...he fills you with the finest of the wheat (a.k.a He provides!)
When you read all these promises of God, and we just stayed in Psalm 147, PRAISE is fitting! When we sing praise to the Lord we are responding appropriately. We are humbly revering the Lord, we are fearing the Lord, we are hoping in his love. All this delights the Lord (v11).
Look, we just finished a holiday titled, 'Thanksgiving', and that's the bottom line of this post. The Lord has provided so much for us to praise him for. Psalm 147:7 says, "Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the guitar! (Ok, the verse actually said 'on the lyre', since a lyre is a stringed instrument and I'm a guitar player we'll go with guitar)
This time of year is really busy for a lot of us. We can easily get very distracted and overwhelmed. I pray we all take time to STOP and truly reflect on how wonderful, how great, how loving, how understanding, how giving our Lord is! He loves and gives so much that he gave us his one and only son to be born as a perfect sacrifice to provide for us a way to spend eternity with Him.
Praise is fitting!
